Ruptured Budgie Rally 2014 and before … report by Phil Field
The Budgie in 2014 took on a different look for some of us this year , some of us would be Phil k1W1 Bourke , the Malilama, Arron Field, Lance Nichols, Nigel Spence and myself. Different because we left a week early to head north as far Noosa and then return to the rally from there. Object of the exercise was to find as many good roads as we could and have a bit of fun.
Saturday was meet at Road Warriors at 730 for an 8 departure , I got up on time , the bike was packed , went outside and hit the button …….. silence , again …….. hmmm,,, Jump leads , bonnet up hook up , hit button action , roll em . I was only about half hour late and the bike continued to do that all week except didn’t need the jump start , just needed to hit the button a number of times before anything happened and only first thing in the morning , rest of the day no problem . ho hum
First night was Port Macquarie after a great ride on Thunderbolts and the Oxley. Got into port about an hour after dark , booked into the caravan park and headed out for dinner. Relax with a few beers and some good socialising and hit the sack a very contented group. The morning was clear and promised a good day riding after a breakfast at a cafe just up the road from the van park. Cruised up the Hwy with Dale from the Nevells to Macksville where Dale and Galdys his wife turned off for a breakfast appointment and we headed off to Bowraville to hook up with Mark, a mate of Mals. Mark sorted us out with a welcome tea and sandwiches in return for moving a couple of bits of wood for him , wood !!! about 6m long .300 x .080 hardwood , urggh , heavy !!
Second half of the day got better, Urunga , Waterfall Way, Bellingen, where I had a break to catch up with an old school mate who makes the best cuppa and after our annual catch up off to Dorrigo along the best bit of Waterfall Way. The others had gone on ahead and I found them in Dorigo at the Smallest Bike Museum in the world, Juan’s Cafe , Juan is a character who welcomes motorcyclist and gives you a good laugh. After a night in Dorrigo pub, well an evening really , the bar closed at about 7.30 and we had to retreat to our room with adequate supplies to see us through , worked well though.
Off to another great day of riding, started off heading north out of Dorrigo through the State Forrest on well cared for dirt roads till we got to Orara Rd and on to Grafton. From there it was on to the Summerland Way and over to Kyogle and on to the Kyogle Rd across to Tyalgum. Called into the Tyalgum pub to see about accommodation , $40.00 a head and it was a , well not too good so off to the showground where we could stay for $10.00 and full use of the facilities . I think it was probably better than the pub even if it had no walls! Had to go to the pub for dinner as there was no where else to go , food was up to expectations , lousy but hot , attitude from the staff was pretty bad , all in all a good pub to avoid . We stocked up on the necessary beverages and headed back to the showground, lit a fire and settled in. Good mates, good wine, hot fire, great days ride , ahhh all good .
Next day had us breakfasting at a great cafe with really good food and friendly service, hard to believe it was the same town !!From Tyalgum it was off to Marwillumbah and across to the coast, Mals bike had scrubbed a set of rear pads so we had to stop off at Nerang and fit some replacements. Done and dusted we headed off again to Beaudesert for lunch, great pub, great lunch, friendly service, a definite if your ever up that way. After lunch we headed for Tamborine Mt and Canungra, Great ride and I think that is where we caught a the guy on the side car and his dog swinging for him . The guy must have been at least 80 and still loving what he was doing we can all hope we are still enjoying out bikes at his age !!!We stayed overnight at Brendan’s place, Arron’s brother, who cooked us up a great bbq and made us feel really welcome.
Wednesday had a lot in store for us , look up Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious , mark them on a map and go there and ride them , you will not be sorry , some of the best twisties there are in a Aus , I kid you not !! After that it was over to Noosa but this had it downside , the sky turned black ahead and it started to sprinkle so on with the wet weathers just in case . Well did it rain!!!! By the time we got to our stop we were saturated through .Our home for the night was another of Mal’s aquaintances ,……………. Cooked us up a fantastic meal put us up in the music studio and made us feel completely at home. As we were packing in the morning …… was busy cooking a beautiful big plate of scrambled eggs and a huge pot of tea with a matching coffee, if ever your invited to stay at one of Mals friends places just accept , don’t know how he does it !
We left Mal there and headed south once more to make our way to the rally . On the way back we had to go past Amberlerey Air Force Base and were lucky enough to see some of our Air Force fighters doing some training , getting paid to play with toys like that must be the best !!!Met up with Arron again shortly as we were heading for Lismore to stay with a mate of Lance’s, If your going to travel in a group its best to make sure the group has friends along the way !!!!Mark Lance is building a house just across the road from the local sports club so guess where we went for dinner , after dinner drinks , after, dinner drink drinks, and so on .
The morning had us in Lismore having a great breakfast at another great cafe, there was a family dining there with a kid about three or four who when we left just walked off with us, seemed he wanted to see our bikes and there wasn’t a damn thing mum or dad could do to stop him so we ended up with a farewell group seeing us on our way . I have a feeling that kid will be getting a bike as soon as he is able! I remember the first time I knew I was going to ride bikes , do you ?
After that it was a spirited cruise over to Tenterfield for lunch and off to the rally site.Arrived at the rally to be met by the guys from the QLD Guzzi Club with their usual friendly and efficient welcome. Found the rest of the NSW lot and settled in for a good evening of social chit chat etc . As usual plenty of fire wood though due to change of property ownership there was no spit roast this year , I’ve been assured it will be on again next year .
Among the standouts for 2014 in NSW terms was the presence of Laurie Kerr on his sweet V7 who had come all the way from Harden near Yass by himself and rode back again on Sunday again on his own and did the whole ride in one day, big effort mate ,well done. Another stand out was first time rallyist Paul who got a taste for socialising at rallys and managed to meet everyone there as he got lost after dark and had to go to every camp site to find us, isn’t it always the case at rallys that every camp you walk into gives you a drink or a smoke of some sort that only make finding your own camp site even harder . Welcome to rallying Paul.
We all headed off Sunday morning bright and early , I wanted to get back on Sunday and quite a few joined me. Stopped at Ashford to top up and met the same guys we met there last year ,Blackadder and his crew . Over to Glen Innes and on to Uralla for lunch . Lunch was a bit ordinare as our usual cafe was closed which left the choices a bit flat but we managed . Fueled up and headed for Walcha to visit my mate in the Caltex there .( Ask me some time .) Remember that starter that had been playing up all week , well about 20 ks from Walcha the Griso just stopped , like 130 kph and some one reached over and hit the kill switch, dead as !!
I was at the back so was stranded , I scratched my head for a bit when Dale and a couple of other Nevells turned up , more head scratching and still dead as .Lance aand Arron had turned around to come to my rescue but it just would not fire. Hmmm NRMA , joined up and waited for the tow truck . He tried but nothing so floated the Griso into Walcha and hitched a ride with Arron back to Sydney . Now,,, Arron had just before the rally had taken delivery of a just superseded BMW GSA so I had a very comfortable trip to Gloucester where things got better.
You see Arron was knackerd so asked me to ride back to Sydney . Oh ok ,it I must , now I know its a BMer but I got to tell ya , there is a reason those things are the one all others are judged by , awesome German engineering at its best , now I would not buy one cause I’m a short ass and those things are huge on a biblical scale but as a mile eater they are something else !
So a week of touring with good mates , great roads , good food , meeting new and old friends , Ruptured Budgie Rally a good ride home , as far as Walcha and a ride on a great bike I will never own ,probably , doesn’t get much better than that !!
Oh what was wrong with the Griso ? Fuel hose came of the pump , there is now a spare in my tool kit. Starter hasn’t played up since, Guzzi Gods trying to tell me something? You tell me .
